Blog Post 7: JackBox Games

Today in class we played QuipLash to examine the effects of audience in the game as well as mechanics of the game itself.

Up to 8 players can play the game, however more than that can join as the “audience” the audience doesn’t get to create their own answers, however they can vote on which answer they like the best from the players. This leads to a voting system mechanic where the audience (we had 20 in our class) ended up determining the outcome of every round.

I personally did not enjoy being an audience member, I think to really have fun with the game you have to be the one who creates the answers. That way people vote for your answers and you can have the validation of winning. Otherwise being an “audience” member feels like you’re not even playing just spectating.

The MDA aesthetic for this game is Fellowship meaning it a community where the player is an active part of it. Another MDA aesthetic this game utilizes is Expression, because the player gets to use their own answer (the funnier the more votes they get) to try to win the game.

Overall this was a really fun class and I really enjoyed watching the game be played as I’ve never played it, but I wouldn’t want to watch someone else play again.
